Gilmore Girls Project: Season One, Rory’s Birthday Parties

Season One

Episode Six: “Rory’s Birthday Parties”

Original Airdate: November 9, 2000

What a difference a day makes. The swanky birthday celebration Emily hoses is a freaky Friday for Rory. But Lorelai’s Saturday party is way cool—not counting the big blowup between Lorelai and Emily.

So, I was a bit confused writing that episode blurb, because Lorelai and Emily don’t have a blowup at the Saturday night party, they fight at the Friday night party. But I suppose to-MA-toe, to-MAH-toe at this point.

I’ve noticed that there is a running plot twist what keeps popping up in key moments throughout the whole series and that is that sometimes a lot of the drama between the characters could be avoided—or at least lessened—if they would just communicate better. Although, at the same time, isn’t that one of cruxes of the show: a lack of communication? So I suppose with that, then it fits. But it’s apparent in this episode when we have Rory not telling Lorelai that Emily invited all the Chilton kids to her party without permission and Rory didn’t tell Emily she didn’t like her classmates.

But, again, as an author, I know that miscommunication or none at all, drives drama and conflict, which is what good stories are all about, so I guess that point of my thoughts is mute.

Funny Quotes:

Luke: That’s the wrong table.
Rory: Since when is there a right table?
Luke: Since the coffee cake I baked for you and the stupid balloons I blew up for you are at that table over there.

Jackson: (comes running into the kitchen and says to Lorelai) Open your mouth and close your eyes.
Lorelai: Who are you talking to?
Jackson: Right. Sorry (runs to Sookie). Open your mouth and close your eyes.
Sookie: Okay. (opens her mouth and closes her eyes).

Luke: She’s not here yet.
Lorelai: Alright. Well, you’ll have to entertain me until she arrives. Okay, Burgerboy! Dance!
Luke: Will you marry me?
Lorelai: (stares agasp) What?
Luke: Just…looking for something to shut you up.
