While Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, Christmas runs a close second. Of course, doesn’t it either run first or second for most people? Perhaps, more first for children, but even adults love the holiday.
Today, I thought I’d share my favorite things about the magical holiday we celebrate each year.
Some of my favorite Christmas song memories are actually not from my youth, but from about ten years or so ago. When I lived in my hometown, before I moved, I worked for the family business with my sister. We pretty much had the office building to ourselves, so every Christmas season, we would blare the Christmas music on the radio (which would start the day after Thanksgiving). Her favorite song is Holly Jolly Christmas by Burl Ives. My favorite is Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree by Brenda Lee.
Favorite Christmas Movie
From Home Alone to Charlie Brown’s Christmas, from Home Alone 2 to How the Grinch Stole Christmas (the cartoon, not the live actions one), from the Tim Allen Santa Claus movies to all the Animagic classics like, Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer, Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town, A Year without a Santa Claus, to the animated versions of Frosty the Snowman, Mickey’s Christmas Carol, The Polar Express, and ‘Twas the Night before Christmas.
Even if that means watching them over and over again, we watch them all. While I have a lot that I love to watch every year, my favorite part of the tradition is 24 Hours of A Christmas Story on TBS every year.
Favorite Christmas Cookie
This one is a big of a conundrum for me. While I love those peanut butter cookies with the Hershey’s Kiss in the middle, I also love my Grandma Reimche’s Crust cookies.
I remember every Christmas my Grandma Reimche would lay out all her cookies on a platter that my Grandpa had made for her. Handmade, the platter isn’t worth much by antique standards, but to me it’s priceless.
The only problem is that while my Grandma had people over to her house, we are so far from family, that the only people who would eat the cookies are us.
My kids don’t need all that sugar and I don’t need all the calories! *wink wink*. I do plan to make a bunch of different types of cookies for friends this year, though. And of course, I will post the recipes in the coming weeks!
Favorite Christmas Ornament
Between the handmade ones from before I was born, to the ones of my youth, to now the ones that my children have made or I’ve collected for them, I can safely say that all my ornaments are my favorite. Are there any that are more favored than others? It’s really hard to say.
But, I will say that I have one that is dear to my heart. It’s nothing but a styrofoam star that I lined with some Christmas ribbon, sprinkled with glitter, and stuck a Santa Clause sticker on the side. I made it in school when I was in the 3rd grade and it’s been on my Christmas tree (whether at my parents house or my own house) ever since. Unfortunately, age broke it apart last year. While my husband suggested tossing it (OH THE HORROR!) I glued it and, thankfully, it’s back on the tree.
Don’t forget that my novel, When the Black Roses Grow, was chosen for Books and Benches December Cover Contest! If you haven’t done so yet, please stop on by and vote! Thank you so much!
