Last year for Halloween a friend of mine made her kids costumes. Of course, being the super crafty woman that she is, they were amazing—her son’s in particular as he looked exactly like a minion. The costume was unlike anything I’d ever seen made by someone I know. I mean, seriously, this costume rocked.
While I’d like to think that I’m a crafty person, I mean, I can sew and have made my share of things like cute stuffed baskets and clothes over the years. However, with that said, when it comes to making things like a Halloween costume, well, in all honesty, the older I get, the less inclined I am to do something that extravagant—especially for just one night of Trick or Treating.
Yes, I want to make my own cream, cheese, yogurt, bread, and everything else under the sun to homestead and be as far away from the grocery store as I can, but a Halloween costume? That thought is daunting at best.
And one problem where the solution is . . . “Let’s go buy one.”
Of course, up until now, my lack of wanting to sit by a sewing machine and create perfection was never an issue. My oldest daughter always was fine with Disney Princesses, or characters like Cat Woman or Nightmare Moon (Hello Etsy! Let someone else do it!), however this last year she announced to me that next year she wants to be Discord from My Little Pony.
With my utterly confused question came my oldest shoving my phone in her face with the My Little Pony game open. And there was Discord.
Oh-my-French-word-that-I-don’t-say-in-front-of-the-kids. Is she serious?
So there I was, standing in the middle of the kitchen with soapy, dish-water dripping hands thinking to myself a rather long stream of colorful metaphors at the thought of what this costume would entail.
Of course to someone like my crafty friend, probably nothing at all, but to me . . . it’s a lot. Like a lot, a lot. Like crying in the corner, sucking my thumb, a lot.
Not to mention, who wants to be this for Halloween???? What happened to Disney Princesses or pretty fairies or the cute animals like a kitten????
What happened wanting one I can just buy at the store????
My only hope and prayer is that through the course of this next year, she will decide on something else. Keep your fingers crossed for me. Please.
