Adventures in Writing a Novel

Signing my 3rd Publishing Contract #writing #amwriting #writerslife

It’s official!! I signed my 3rd publishing contract on March 31, 2015!! So that means When the Black Roses Grow is in contract for publishing with Soul Mate Publishing! I’m on cloud nine right now, especially after what I’ve been through with this novel.

This novel was by far, the hardest one I’ve written, and it put me through 10 rounds of some boxing championship punches. From the characters, to the plot, to the dialect, each draft just seemed to fight me more than the one before. I submitted the novel twice to my editor, and pulled it twice before she could read it because I felt like it wasn’t ready and would only get rejected. Of course, with each time I pulled it, I went through another round of edits and revisions, and with each draft, my frustration with the novel only grew. Growing so deeply, that I tabled the novel and wasn’t going to further work on it or try to seek publication for it.

In a last ditch effort to spare myself from the pain of wasting ten months on this novel, I gave it to a friend to read. Of course, she loved it and the only thing she could confirm wasn’t that the novel was bad, wasn’t the fact that the characters were flawed, nor that the plot stank, but actually, that I was an overthinking, idiot for not believing in this manuscript. Go figure. *sigh*

With her advice, I went through it one last time and submitted it. I’m so glad I listened. I will keep everyone posted about a cover reveal and release date, and when I get the information, I’ll update the page for the novel!

For now, I’m just basking in the 3rd contract sunlight.

~When the Black Roses Grow~

Fear of witchcraft is spreading around Salem village. While those accused and sentenced face death, everyone else faces the risk accusations could be placed upon them.

As Emmalynn Hawthorne places a bouquet of flowers upon her mother’s grave—a woman hung for being a witch—a circle of black roses sprouts out of thin air. The flowers send worry through her mind, but the worry soon turns into terror as another vine of black roses sprouts and grows throughout the inside of her home.

When word begins to spread that Emmalynn has stolen the affections of James DeKane, a handsome newcomer desired by Mary Pruett, the sister of Emmalynn’s late husband, tempers spark, and with Emmalynn’s own suspicion of a power she believes she’s conjuring, she becomes fearful that she will be the next accused.

A historical paranormal romance, WHEN THE BLACK ROSES GROW, spins the story of fearing witchcraft and living through persecution in 1692 Salem Village, Massachusetts.

  1. Congratulations, Angela. Sounds like another fascinating storyline. I posted on a historical topic on my blog today. The entire thing got the writer-in-me thinking up story lines for novels, and I’m not a historical fiction writer. Thought you might like to check it out. I’ll be on the lookout for updates on When the Black Roses Grow.
